Swifts make cup progress

Stourport booked a trip to West Midlands League side Wellington in the next stage of the FA Cup after seeing off Lye in the extra preliminary round.

Two first half goals put them in control and a solid defensive display after the break kept their visitors at bay.

Swifts dominated from the off with Kevin Spencer crashing a volley wide of the target on nine minutes after Alex Cowley had sent a free-kick into the area.

Two minutes later, striker Ben Maund missed a glorious chance to open the scoring when an Ashley Parsons-Smith cross picked out the youngster but he shot wide from in front of goal.

Stourport’s pressure finally paid off on 12 minutes. Good work from Cowley ended with him steering the ball into the area for Parsons-Smith to place his shot past the Lye keeper.

The home side continued to press and Pountney was next to go close when, ten minutes before the break, he got his head on a Parsons-Smith cross only to see his effort fly wide.

But the Swifts striker wasn’t going to be denied for long and he doubled the lead in first half injury time with an excellent curling effort.

With a two-goal cushion, Rod Brown’s side were content to protect their lead and the pick of the second half chances fell to the visitors, Ben Jevons forcing home keeper Brendon Bunn into action.

Stourport’s trip to Wellington will be on Saturday, August 30.
