MEN’S HOCKEY: Stourport commence the new season in the Midlands Division One with a 2-1 defeat at home to Coventry and North Warwickshire.

Despite having the majority of the game in the opposition half, Stourport couldn’t turn that domination into to goals.

Seven short corners for the home side against two for the opposition was also a disappointing outcome when teams should be converting a minimum 50 per cent of set-pieces..

A first half opening goal from Phil Baldwin could not be added to and a defensive mistake 10 minutes from time provided Coventry the chance to take three points.

Stourport go to Bridgnorth on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the seconds lost a thrilling game 4-2 to Harborne. Dan Dew scored but Stourport trailed 4-2 at half-time.

They then fell 4-1 down but Rob Nicholls pulled one back.

The thirds drew 3-3 with Harborne, with Pete Gibbon bagging a brace and Ryan Delo on target.

Stourport fourths recorded a fine 5-2 win over Worcester, with braces from James Harris and their player of the match Jamie Ross helping them on their way. Kyle Gayne added a fifth.

The fifths got the better of Edgbaston 2-0, with Mike Shaw and Tom Whitworth on target.
