This weekend saw a mixture of results for Phoenix, as all teams were in action.

There was a landmark first goal for our newest and youngest, Boys, team, marking the rapid improvement as they gain match experience. The Under 14 team made through the first round of their Cup competition, and the Under 10 Raiders had somewhat of a goal spree.

Kidderminster Harriers v Wyre Forest Phoenix Boys

The Under 9 Boys played their fourth game of the season away to Kidderminster Harriers. They took a massive step forward this week by halving the score since the last time these two teams met. The defenders Tyler-Jay Wilding, Joseph Evans and John Brennan did well marking and getting the ball off the opposition. There was some good passing by all of the boys and they kept possession of the ball well. Brandon Williams scored a fantastic goal, the first goal of the season and the boys section, when Kidderminster Harriers gave away a free kick just outside their box. Finlay Powell also had a great shot on goal, which was saved by the Harrier keeper. Finley Preston and Jake Tew made some great runs up and down the pitch winning the ball off the ball off the other team. Madison Collins marked the opposition well and made a great effort to keep the ball away from the goal. Callum Lockett made some amazing saves in goal and used the whole of his box to stop the attackers from scoring. The man of the match went to all of the boys for their hard work, effort and determination.

Kewford Eagles West 1 v 12 Wyre Forest Phoenix Raiders Girls

The Under 10 Raiders headed into this match still undefeated and started the game with their same usual quick tempo and intensity, smothering the Kewford possession quickly. It wasn't long before Wyre forest phoenix raced into an 8-1 half time lead.

The second half went much the same as the first with Wyre Forest Phoenix Raiders continuing to pile on the pressure. Another 4 goals followed in the second half making the full time score 12-1. Goals: Abi Reeves (3), Rosie Lawley (4), Isabelle Gibbons (3), Libby Drapier (2).

Wyre Forest Phoenix Girls 1 v 2 Kewford Eagles South

The Under 11’s knew playing against Kewford was yet again another tough game for the girls. After beating us last season we knew what we were up against and were ready for it and both teams looked fairly equally matched at the start. There was a lot of tackling and strain on both defences. We kept getting the ball up the pitch but were unsuccessful with our shots. As a goal kick was taken the girls put pressure onto their players and managed to pinch the ball off one of the defenders, a pass to Olivia Wood leaving her with only one player to beat, allowed Olivia to have a strong shot and beat the keeper, making the score 1-0. We finished the first half in the lead. The second half kicked off and you could tell that Kewford wanted to get this back, putting extreme pressure on our defence, with Ellie Symons helping out, and Megan Hancher making great tackles we were able to hold our lead for a considerable time. However, a penalty was awarded to Kewford and they scored, making the score 1-1. It was all to play for now and the girls were doing really well, whilst defending well and also making some good attacking runs by Holly Tew and Olivia Wood. Despite all of our efforts we conceded from a long powerful shot. Although we still continued to try and get back another goal it was too late making the final score 2-1. Goal: Olivia Wood (1). Overall, the girls battled well and it was an unfortunate loss. Girl of the game went to Megan Hancher for her constant tackling, positive attitude and good clearances from the back.

Wyre Forest Phoenix Girls 0 v 4 Dudley Sports

The Under 13's Phoenix played against top of the table Dudley today and for the first 20 minutes held their opponents well. However soon after a long ball was defended poorly by the Phoenix defence and allowed Dudley to run through and make the score 1-0. Bethany Savage produced a number of good saves to keep the score down, but Dudley struck again just before half time. 2-0. Phoenix came out fighting after the break, but couldn’t really muster any threatening attacks on the Dudley defence. Shortly after the game was killed off by a soft penalty in the box, given for a tangle of a number of player’s legs. Phoenix’s heads remained focused on the fight back and this allowed Dudley to round off the scoring after some sloppy Phoenix play. Final score 0-4. A good performance against top of the league, however the score line did not reflect the game.

Wyre Forest Phoenix Flyers 4 v 0 Gornal Girls

The Under 14’s were at home for a Cup match against Gornal Girls from the Premier League, and a full squad. The Flyers started with a new configuration, a new player and were a little nervous for the first few minutes. The Flyers finally settled down and Fleur Connolly put through a great pass to Sydney Harris who buried it for the first goal after 17 minutes Gornal came out fighting but it was who Fleur got her first after 27 minutes. Then it was Lucy McLatchy’s two footed shot from a fumbled save went in a minute later to be in a comfortable position at half time.

The pace was slower at the kick off with the Flyers midfield and defence having more to do, but handling the pressure well. The Flyers were playing a good strong game and started to up the work rate, but they couldn't find the back of the net. Good defending held off Gornal who were getting close, having some corners and creating a little danger in the Flyers box. A useful clearance and good run by the Flyers hooked up Fleur again for her second after 30 minutes to finish the game at 4-0. Goals: Fleur Connolly (2), Lucy McLatchy (1), Sydney Harris (1). Well done today girls, a great display of football from you all, but particularly to Girl of the Game and new team member Shiraz Hempstock. Onward to Quarter finals and keep up the great play.

Wyre Forest Phoenix Girls 1 v 5 Gornal Girls

The Under 18 were at home to Gornal Girls in the Central Warwickshire League..

Midwest Counties Female Football League

Welland Ladies 5 (2) v 2 (1) Wyre Forest Phoenix County

Today saw WFP Ladies County Travel to Welland, and we were hoping continue the good form. However this was an away day to forget as for some reason no one seemed to produce their best football today, thus the result seemed inevitable as they out fought us in all areas and took the chances they created well. Our goals were scored today by Mellissa Knott, a tap in from inside the 6 yard box, and a great strike by Mollie Plant making it 2 in 2 games for her. Final score 5-2. We have a chance to get revenge next week when return having been drawn against them in the County Cup.
