THE nominations are in and voting is now open for 2014’s Shuttle Sports Personality of the Year.

It’s been a great year for Wyre Forest with residents excelling at all levels.

As always, the district punches above its weight in terms of success but 2014 has also seen a promising crop of newcomers emerge.

Leading the way is Kidderminster’s very own Claire Cashmore, who won her first individual gold medal at the IPC European Championships in Holland.

The Paralympic swimmer stormed to victory in the SB8 100m breaststroke and was also part of the Team GB quartet who won silver in the relay.

Stourport boxer Jerry Mongan has had a year to remember as he earned a host of titles and silverware.

The teen became Amateur Boxing Association’s National Schoolboy Champion in his age section and was victorious representing England at the Three Nations tournament. Mongan also won a play-off to earn a call up for the European Schoolboy Championships in Hungary, where he reached the semi-finals and took bronze.

Gifted young golfer Emily Price also landed the equivalent of a hole-in-one with her victory at the English Girls Golf Open U15s Championships in the summer.

The Cleobury Mortimer GC member has also represented England and clinched the Shropshire Schools tournament.

It’s also been a great year for Samurai Judo Club veteran Paul Jones.

The 54-year-old became the first person from Wyre Forest to earn a sixth level black belt. A judo practitioner since 1970, Smith also won European silver in the 1990s.

Meanwhile, Kidderminster and Stourport Athletic Club youngster Katie Lambert has broken into our top five. The teenage hammer thrower has been one of the club’s stars of the year, winning gold in the National Athletics Championships in the U17s section and at the English Schools Championships. The youngster has also represented England twice at U17 and U20 level and earned silver at the Sainsbury’s School Games.
