GARY Whild says he’s playing a waiting game in his bid to bring Lee Hughes back to Kidderminster Harriers.

The manager is still keen to add the former West Bromwich Albion goal-getter to his strike-force, despite already strengthening by signing Danny Wright.

But Hughes is still contracted to Forest Green Rovers until the end of the season and is in talks with the Gloucestershire outfit about a move.

The hitman would have to take a pay cut to play for the club where he started his professional career and scored 70 goals in 139 appearances between 1994 and 1997, before joining West Bromwich Albion for a fee that eventually rose to £380,000.

Whild said: “We would like Lee here and for the lad it’s perfect, he only lives ten minutes away.

“He’s got a young family so it would work out well.

“I believe that Lee is in talks with Forest Green Rovers, so we’ll wait and see what happens.”

But Whild has not been slow in bolstering his squad, signing Shrewsbury Town midfielder Aaron Wildig on a month’s loan and Wright, who was released by Gateshead and has joined the Reds until the campaign’s finish.

The Gloucestershire-based forward found the travelling to the North East difficult, and Whild is confident a move closer to home suits the club and the player.

Both new faces debuted in Tuesday night’s 1-0 win at Aldershot, which was Harriers’ fourth straight win on the road.

That run of results is in stark contrast to their form at Aggborough, where they have struggled to adapt to a boggy playing surface and lost four in a row, their worst run of results since the 1998-99 season.

“It’s not just the run we’ve put together recently, if you look at our wins at Forest Green, Woking and Grimsby we’ve been doing it all season,” added Whild.

“But it was another good performance, we made a few changes and it paid off. It was good to bring in the likes of Aaron Wildig and Danny Wright, they are experienced lads who gave everyone a lift.

“Micky Mellon at Shrewsbury has done us a big favour because Aaron is not being paid much by us.”

Whild is also weighing up whether to continue with Jasbir Singh in goal after he impressed on his debut at Aldershot, with Danny Lewis rested.

Josh Gowling is also nearing a return to action from a knee injury, although Saturday’s trip to Chester (3pm ko) may come too soon.

Chester are managed by former Harriers manager Steve Burr, and Whild is looking forward to tackling his former boss after being held 2-2 at Aggborough in August.

He said: “Steve and worked well together and enjoyed some really good times at Harriers.

“He’ll want to win this game, like he’ll want to win every game of football but we’ll go with our confidence in good shape after a good result at Aldershot.”
