Kidderminster Carolians 23, Wolverhampton 22

FEARLESS Freddie Morgan struck a last-gasp penalty as Kidderminster Carolians inflicted Wolverhampton's first defeat of the season in Midlands Division Two West (South).

The young scrum half showed nerves of steel to seal a fine win for KCs, who lit up the gloom with a terrific game of rugby between two very evenly matched sides.

Morgan opened the scoring with a penalty only for Wolverhampton to level the scores through Ben Barnes.

The visitors piled on the pressure and went into half-time with a 10-3 lead when Alex Jeavons touched down and Barnes converted.

Ten minutes into the second half, Wolverhampton continued to see plenty of the ball and extended their lead when Alex Bird touched down.

Trailing 22-3,the match looked beyond Kidderminster but they were given a glimmer of hope when left wing Laurence Hughes put replacement fullback Mark Wratten away for his second senior try, which cut the deficit to 14 points.

Kidderminster received a boost when Wolverhampton's Gareth Hill was sent off for a late tackle on flyhalf George Morgan as he cleared the ball to touch.

Carolians seized the initiative and with Layton Wilkinson in the vanguard they built up a real head of steam, despite losing skipper Rhys Pritchard with a shoulder injury.

George Morgan ran through the Wolves’ forwards to set up his brother Freddie for a try, as the hosts made it 22-15.

A mighty effort from a Kidderminster scrum allowed George Morgan to touch down as the home side closed the points gap to two points.

With time almost up the home side were awarded a penalty on Wolves’ ten metre line and although the kick was at the edge of Freddie Morgan’s range the young number nine showed nerves of steel to slot the ball cleanly between the posts and complete a remarkable comeback.

On Saturday, KC’s entertain top of the table Moseley Oak (2.15pm ko).
