SAMURAI dynamic duo Darcie Hancocks and Leah Grosvenor won medals at the Flanders Open in Belgium.

The event is a strong competition with 800 players from 15 countries taking part, and the Samurai were delighted that all five of their players won contests.

Grosvenor, having just moved up to the under-52 kilogram category, was up against physically stronger players.

She started with a good win by a high score against a Belgian player and then beat Swiss number one Delia Vetterill, who went on to take the other bronze medal, by maximum points.

In the knockout stages, she recorded a high-scoring win over Finnish national squad member Venla Lalho.

She then powered into the semi final with an impressive victory over a Belgian.

Grosvenor came up against Scotland number one Emma Forrest and lost a tight contest by one minor penalty.

But she bounced back to take bronze with another win over a home opponent.

Hancocks started with a win over a Belgium fighter and was edged out by Swiss number one Celine Dierickx.

In the knockout stages, she defeated two British players to reach the final and set up a rematch with Dierickx, who had demolished the other half of the knockout fairly easily.

The Samurai fighter started the final well but then Dierickx was able to get her high-collar grip and threw her with a powerful backwards throw to win the match and leave Darcie with silver.

Matt Hemer started with wins against players from Holland and Luxembourg to put him into the knockout.

Despite losing to the eventual winner, he reached the repechage against a Dutch player, where he was soon two scores up but then seemed to change grips and was caught out by a good throw to end his chances of a medal.

Nathan Gallacher weighed only 43kg but took part in the lightest weight category — the under-50kgs section. He reached the knockout stage before losing to a Scottish player.

Bryony Griffiths was the final Samurai player to compete. She beat a Belgian player with a good throw in her first contest, but then lost to a French fighter.

This still put her through to the knockout, but here she lost to a Welsh player and that eliminated her.
