CLAIRE Cashmore set a new personal best as she raced to bronze at the IPC European Championships in Madeira.

The Wyre Forest swimmer sliced over a second off her previous time as he set one minute and 10.62 seconds to take bronze in the S9 100 metres butterfly.

The event was won by Spain’s Sarai Gascon, who set a time of 01.07.61.

But Team GB have been in great form at the event.

After three days, British swimmers had clocked up 16 medals.

Cashmore returned to the pool on Wednesday morning in the heats of the 200-metre individual medley.

She booked her place in the final with a time of 2:43.0 at the Penteada Olympic Swimming Complex.

She also starts the SB8 100m breaststroke, traditionally her strongest event, in the heats on Friday morning.

The Manchester-based swimmer, who grew up in Kidderminster, had enjoyed a fine week.

She obtained the qualifying time for the Rio 2016 Paralympics after more good form at the British Para International Meet in Glasgow.

She clocked one minute and 21.67 seconds in the SB8 100 metre breaststroke and also qualified for the 100m backstroke.

British swimming selectors will now take results and times into consideration before revealing the squad on May 16.
