WORCESTERSHIRE skipper Daryl Mitchell praised the “character” and “desire” of his side after they routed Leicestershire to reignite their promotion hopes.

Opening bowlers Joe Leach (4-10) and Matt Henry (4-27) were instrumental in demolishing Leicestershire’s second innings for just 43 at Grace Road.

The duo bowled “extremely well” to set up an “important” seven-wicket triumph for Worcestershire with a day to spare in Specsavers County Championship Division Two.

“It was a great result and it was important to get our first win,” said Mitchell.

“Henry and Leach bowled extremely well and got the ball to nip around on a deteriorating surface.

“I remember beating Kent inside two days and we bowled out Lancashire for a low score at New Road but I don’t think I’ve ever played in a game where we’ve bowled out a team as cheaply.”
