THERE was a festival of golf when Cleobury Mortimer held their Captains’ weekend.

It was a good day for Paul Tierney, who shot 36 points to win the seniors’ competition as well as picking up a nearest the pin prize.

The evening followed with the junior competition which was over nine holes at Badgers Sett, which was won by Arnuld Edmonds with 21 points.

A tricky putting competition was won by Mike Wood with 16 putts on countback for the men and Chris Perry with 16 putts for the ladies.

There was also a par three competition, which Helen Watson won for the ladies with 23 shots and Jack Severn took for the men with a level-par score of 18.

Saturday started with the main competitions, the Captain’s Cup Trophy for the men and The Straughton Salver for ladies.

In the Salver, Heather Pringle finished in third place with 31 points, followed in second by Sara Pain on countback.

First place went to Sylvia Tudor Hughes with 32 points, who announced a return to form after a quiet winter.

In the Captain’s Cup, Colm Berry continued his good form with an 68 nett.

Last year’s winner Jem Jones was also in the running but in the end had to settle for third place.

The day belonged to Edmonds who after playing well on Friday night and winning the junior competition, looked in good stead for the weekend and sealed the silverware with a nett score of 66.

A successful weekend was completed when the captains faced the presidents on Sunday morning.

Prizes were going to the biggest matchplay result and the best pairs betterball Stableford score.

Garry Hawes and John Haywood stormed to the biggest win, beating their opponents 6&5, while the best betterball Stableford score was 40 points, which was won by Graham Butcher and Dave Timmis as the clash ended in a draw.
