SAMURAI Judo Club's Leah Grosvenor continued her successful competition run with victories at the Northern Ireland Open.

The 15-year-old started slowly but kicked into gear for the seniors event and won three contests by maximum points to reach the final, where she was up against currently Britain’s best under-21 player from Bristol.

Leah conceded an early score but then fought back well and had her opponent on the ropes but just could not quite get back the score before she ran out of time and had to settle for silver.

In her own age band, under-18, from the moment she stepped onto the mat for her first contest it was clear that she would win the gold.

Nobody could even slow her down: if they stayed on their feet, she threw then for maximum points, but the first time in each case the contest went to the ground she was even more devastating.

Four contests, four maximum point wins, each with a different technique, earned her the gold medal.

The only other Samurai player competing at the event was Rob Alloway in the masters who finished seventh in a large category.

Closer to home there were three medals for Samurai in the same weight category at the club’s open Mini-Me Championships.

Rhea Turner and Isla Tallon defeated everybody else to reach the final, where Rhea defeated Isla to take the gold, whilst Meghann O’Sullivan took bronze in the same weight category.

In the boys, there were two further bronzes for Harrison Flello and Josh Walker.
