THE quarter finals of Kidderminster Snooker League's Valentines Cup were played on May 15.

This cup is a handicapped and aggregate score competition. The first of the matches saw a very tight struggle between Workmans 'B' and Wribbenhall both of the first division.

Workmans had a start of 40 points and extended this with Rob Southall scoring 88 points in the first frame.

Wribbenhall hit back with Pete Gardner scoring 79 in the second frame. Next came the doubles frame which Wribbenhall again won with the pairing of Gary Smith and Graham Bott scoring 63 points.

The fourth frame again went to Wribbenhall with John Roberts scoring 66 points. Thus heading into the final frame all was still to play for.

This frame proved really tight and in fact coming down to the final black ball. Paul Smyth of Workmans thought he had won the frame and match for them when he potted the black but as everyone watched on the white went around the table and into a pocket, which meant the frame was over, thus Wribbenhall won through on this foul shot on the black.

The second match was an all Pockets encounter with the 'A' side playing host to the 'S' side.

The 'A' side had a slight advantage of 16 points at the start but this was soon wiped out as Gary Ruston scored 67 in the first frame and thus put the 'S' side into a 12 point lead.

The second frame was won by Charles Newey of the 'S' side scoring 77 points. The 'A' sides Craig Homer pulled some back in the next frame but Phil Dunn won the final singles frame scoring 67.

Thus going into the doubles frame the 'A' team were 91 points behind. The 'S' side came out winners by over 100 points.

In the third of the quarter finals Pockets 'B' of the Premier League took on St Georges of Division One.

St Georges had an 88 point handicap and although they lost the first frame Lee Page won the second and increased their lead to 100 points going into frame three.

In this frame Dave Timmington of Pockets scored 64 points cutting the lead and in frame four Rich Pepperall of Pockets scored 92 points and thus brought them back to within 10 points of St Georges.

The doubles pair of Andy Smith and Rich Pepperall for Pockets proved too strong for the St Georges pair scoring 91, thus Pockets ran out winners by 77 points.

The final quarter final was between another pair of Pockets teams with the 'E' side playing host to the 'G' side. Pockets 'G' had an 80 point start but this was cut back as the 'E' side won the first frame.

In the second frame Tom Pepperall scored 84 points and thus put them in the lead by 4 points. The third frame again went to the 'E' side but only by 10 points.

In the fourth frame John Betton scored 8o points and thus put the 'E' side 66 points in front going into the doubles frame. The 'E' side pairing of John Betton and Tom Pepperall closed out the game winning the frame with a score of 61.

Thus the 'E' side won by 95 points.

The semi finals will feature Pockets 'B' against Pockets 'S' and Pockets 'E' versus Wribbenhall.
