YOUNG Kidderminster judo star Leah Grosvenor was among the medals at the Scottish under-20 Open in Glasgow.

The 15-year-old from Kidderminster’s Samurai Judo Club, who was recently named Wyre Forest Junior Sportswoman Of The Year for the second year running, was up against a quality field including nearly all of the top ten British players.

This was the age band above Leah’s own under-17 category, but it is an age band she frequently enters.

After a first round bye, she had one of the top Scottish players in the quarter-final and was confident after beating the same opponent four times last year.

Her confidence was well-placed and she won with maximum points to go into the semi-final against another adversary who had never beaten her.

Another maximum point win put Leah through to the final against Scottish number one Josie Steele.

The Samurai player conceded an early score and despite a strong performance could not find a score and has to settle for second place.

There was a second medal for Samurai Judo Club at the same competition from Rob Alloway in the Masters (veterans) section.

Rob reached the semi-final before losing to a Spanish player but he had progressed far enough to be awarded the bronze medal.

Leah’s two medals at the British Championships last December (in her own age band and the older under 20 years age band) took her into the all-time top five Samurai medalists at National and International level, displacing twice British Champion Debbie Read.

The Scottish silver takes Leah’s tally of national and international medals to 43, she needs two more to catch Tom Walker in fourth place and Sarah Newbury (formerly Sarah Biles) in third.

2012 Olympian Kelly Edwards is in second place with 52, whilst Kate Leonardo, formerly Kate Walker, heads the all-time list with 77.
