IN the Alan Atkinson and John Smith League Cup Group A leaders Pockets E faced second place and club rivals Pockets A.

The A side got off to the best start with Jay Shuck and Alan Turner winning the first two frames.

Andy Smith for the 'E' side pulled a frame back with a score of 69. Tom Pepperall won the next frame for the 'E' side to bring the frame score level going into the doubles frame.

The 'E' side pair of John Betton and Andy Smith proved to strong scoring 62 points and thus taking the match and the Group with a tally of 26 points.

Pockets 'A' were runners up in the group on 20 points. In the other games in this group Pockets 'G' beat Workmans 'A' 3-2 and Wribbenhall beat Pockets 'C' 4-1.

In Group B the leaders Pockets 'S' had a trip to St Georges to complete their fixtures.

They got off to a good start with Charles Newey winning the first frame. This was followed by Si Manning scoring 76 and winning the frame for Pockets.

They secured their top stop when Mel Wilson won the next frame. St Georges pulled a frame back through Azim Rias.

The night ended with Charles Newey and Si Manning winning the doubles frame scoring 77.

Franche were the only other team with a chance of qualifying for the Semi Finals but their 3-2 win meant they finished on 21 points as runners up.

In the other game in this group St Johns 'D' beat Pockets 'D' 4-1.

In Group C things were much nearer with three teams in with a chance of reaching the semi-finals.

St Johns 'E' secured their place at the top of the league with a 4-1 win over Workmans 'B'.

The runner up spot was between Pockets 'B' and Chester Road who faced each other at Pockets.

The Pockets team got off to the best start with Tony Kidd winning the first frame.

In the second frame Rich Pepperall of Pockets had a 35 break and took this frame scoring 62 points in total.

Next came the doubles frame and the Pockets pair of Rich Pepperall and Tony Kidd managed in a very messy game to hold their nerve and win scoring 65 points.

Graham Joynes of Chester Road won the next frame but by now any chance of progression in the competition had gone.

The final frame was won by Gareth Ward of Pockets and this proved vital as Pockets 'B' went through to the semi-finals by vertue of being the best runner up in all of the groups with 22 points, just a single point more than Franche who ended up on 21 and two points in front of Pockets 'A'.

The Semi Finals will be Pockets 'E' versus Pockets 'B' and Pockets 'S' versus St Johns 'E'.
