ADAM Wiffen and Ross Whiteley both hit centuries as Worcestershire seconds batted through the final session of their three-day friendly with Somerset at Taunton Vale.

Wiffen made his maiden seconds hundred, eventually finishing on 118 as he struck 15 boundaries in his 250-ball knock.

Whiteley fell just four runs short of his double ton on 196 immediately before Worcestershire skipper Ollie Westbury declared on 389-7 to end the game.

The all-rounder hit seven sixes and 23 fours in his 214-ball innings.

It was Whiteley’s second three-figure score for the seconds after he made a century against Middlesex at New Road during the 2015 campaign.

Wiffen and Whiteley joined forces at 50-2 and added 265 in 56 overs for the third wicket.

They were only parted shortly before tea when Wiffen was lbw to Ollie Sale.

Whiteley added a further 62 in 14 overs with first innings century-maker Zen Malik (20) who was caught at mid-on.

The former Derbyshire player holed out at deep mid-wicket trying to reach his 200.

Worcestershire batted through the day after Somerset’s decision not to declare on the second evening left little room to manoeuvre to set up a positive result.

Spinner Ben Twohig had taken the bowling honours for Worcestershire on day two with 4-82 from 30 overs as Somerset were bowled out for 317 with opener Ben Green scoring 92.

The County opened the match by declaring on 294-5 from 92 overs with Malik hitting an unbeaten 121 for his career-best score for the seconds.

Malik, who celebrated his 20th birthday earlier this month, struck one six and 20 fours in his innings from 215 deliveries.

It was his second ton for the seconds and surpassed his 112 against Warwickshire at Barnt Green two years ago in another friendly.

Opener and skipper Ollie Westbury also impressed in making 85.

New seconds coach Alex Gidman was delighted to taste some cricket after the wash-out of the games with the academy and against Shropshire.
