SAMURAI players were among the medals at the judo club's open green and under championship which attracted contestants from 25 around the UK.

In the boys lower grades, Isaac Sobolowski got to the final where he took on a more experienced Liverpool player. the contest went into extra-time when Isaac incurred a minor penalty and had to settle for silver.

Harrison Flello, having lost to Isaac in the semi-final, took bronze.

In the next category, there were two Samurai entrants, Mateo Allen and Luke Jahromi who met in the final.

Mateo looked favourite to win but Luke pulled off a surprise throw for maximum points to take the gold.

In the boys high grades lighter weight group, James Harrison and Dillon Walker made short work of their opponents to face-off in the final.

This was a tight match between the two friends, with James eventually catching Dillon with a throw into a ground hold to settle the match to take gold.

The heavier boys high grades category was even more interesting, with Evan Turner and Loic Keasey on the one side of the draw and Martin Allen and Harry Ashen on the other side.

Three good wins saw Loic through to a quarter-final match with Evan, which Loic won, whilst on the other side Martin stormed through his first three matches, all by maximum points, and then he defeated Harry to also make the semi-finals.

However Loic and Martin both lost against the run of play and missed out on the final but won their bronze medal play-offs.

In the girls lower grades, Samurai had three players competing. Katy Jennings reached the final of her group before losing to a Birmingham player.

In the next group up Rhea Turner won all three of her contests with maximum points to secure the seventh gold medal of her judo career. Meghann O’Sullivan added a bronze in the last of the weight groups.

Katy, Rhea and Sophie Davis made a step up to the higher grades section and each secured a bronze.
