BOSS Neil MacFarlane has been pleased with how his Kidderminster players have adapted to a new system during pre-season.

The new man at Aggborough has been quick to switch to playing with three at the back during Harriers' friendlies over Aston Villa and Burton Albion and is keen to stick to the formation after identifying it as a strong option for the Reds heading into the new campaign.

He said: "We need to be flexible as the season goes on and have the ability to switch our system, which is something we'll be working on. But when I came in and looked at the personnel we have I though that three at the back would suit us really well.

"It seemed the best system for the players and they have adapted well to it and seem to be enjoying it.

"There is still a lot of work to be done on the training pitch but at the moment it's giving us the freedom to express ourselves while also allowing us to be solid and know our jobs when we don't have the ball.

"I'm pleased with how it is going so far."

Harriers drew 1-1 against Aston Villa on Saturday after Fraser Horsfall's first half opener was quickly cancelled out by Harvey Knibbs.

They followed that with a 2-1 loss at home to Burton Albion on Tuesday night. A youthful Harriers outfit also lost 6-0 at Alvechurch in the Worcestershire Senior Cup on the same night.

Against the Brewers, Ed Williams struck a well-taken goal to give his team the lead at the break before the League One side hit back with two goals in the second half to seal the win.

The game also saw Joe Ironside, Joel Taylor and James Baxendale all featured after injuries.

MacFarlane added: "It was really pleasing again against Burton, especially in the first half when the stuff we have been working on in training could be seen out on the pitch.

"We were pressing hard to get the ball back but also showed real quality in possession.

"From my perspective it saw us build on the Villa game. We have some tough friendlies organised and that is perfect because it tests us.

"The players have all handled themselves really well so far. You have to realise we're a National League North club playing against Championship and League One sides but it's my job to get the players to believe in what they are doing regardless of who they play."

Meanwhile, the manager reiterated his desire to keep his squad together amid rumours that striker Joe Ironside is interesting League Two outfit Stevenage.

He said: "Joe Ironside did well last season and you have to expect other teams to be interested but I want to make it clear that I really don't want to lose anymore players now.

"I've been working with the group for a while and they know what to expect from me. I want to add a couple of players in certain areas so that we're ready for the season rather than losing anyone."

Harriers will continue their pre-season programme when they welcome Championship side Birmingham City to Aggborough this Saturday (3pm kick-off).
