SKIPPER Moeen Ali scored a brilliant double hundred and took four wickets as Worcestershire made big strides towards sealing victory at Yorkshire in County Championship Division One.

The England all-rounder, who resumed on 107, went on to make 219 from 277 balls with four sixes and 27 fours as the visitors amassed 572-7 declared for a first-innings lead of 356.

Then the 31-year-old spinner sparkled with the ball as Yorkshire were reduced to 140-6 in their second innings at Scarborough.

Moeen and Daryl Mitchell, who advanced from his overnight 140 to 178, added 294 for a County second-wicket record against the Tykes.

Joe Clarke and Ed Barnard both scored 34 as the County added 262 more runs in 50.2 overs before declaring.

It was their highest total against Yorkshire and biggest Championship score since the 672-7 declared at Gloucestershire in 2008.

The County claimed five batting points to add to their three from bowling and are on course for a maximum haul of 24 if they claim the last four wickets on the final day.

Moeen hit Adam Lyth back over his head to secure all the batting points in the 107th over.

The partnership was broken when Mitchell fell to a fine catch by Tim Bresnan at slip off Lyth after 333 balls with 22 fours.

Clarke looked in good touch before he tried to whip Lyth on the leg side and was lbw after adding 68 with Moeen.

Moeen went into lunch on 190 out of 479-3 and brought up his double century with a six and four off successive balls from Josh Poysden.

His magnificent knock ended when he was caught at point by Harry Brook off Bresnan.

Ben Cox (18) was lbw to Poysden who also accounted for Ross Whiteley (6) with Bresnan running back behind the wicketkeeper to take a good catch.

Barnard raced to 34 from 25 balls before he provided Poysden (3-128) with a third scalp immediately before the declaration.

Moeen then made two pre-tea breakthroughs in dismissing openers Lyth and Brook.

Lyth (17) was lbw in his first over and Brook (16) followed him back to the pavilion after driving Moeen into the hands of Josh Tongue at mid-on.

Moeen continued to wreak havoc after the interval with Gary Balance (19) taken by Clarke at second slip and former Worcestershire player Tom Kohler-Cadmore lbw for eight offering no shot.

Wayne Parnell then got in on the act and picked up the prized wicket of Kane Williamson (59) who tried to upper-cut a delivery and nicked through to Cox.

The South African all-rounder also removed Bresnan as Mitchell gathered a sharp catch at second slip.
