A RICHARD Burgess penalty ensured Bewdley saw off Studley 1-0 on Tuesday night and booked their place in the semi-finals of the Worcestershire Senior Urn.

Town bounced back from two defeats in the West Midlands League Premier Division to see off their rivals from the Midland Alliance at the Beehive ground.

Joint manager Craig Payton said: "This is a big win for us, it gives the club a boost.

"Now we must concentrate on getting ourselves right and really push on."

On Saturday Town's title hopes were dented when they lost 3-1 to Ellesmere Port at Ribbesford Meadows on Saturday.

Defeat leaves Town 14 points behind leaders Bridgnorth Town in eighth place.

"I think the title is too far away from us now," said Craig Payton.

"We are 14 points behind the leaders and it would take a big effort for us to get back on track.

"We've been great in the first half and really not came out firing at all in the second half of games and I can't explain why.

"We have a few lads coming back from injury but that's no excuse.

"But the players have let themselves and the club down."

Against Ellesmere on Saturday Bewdley were thankful to keeper Tom Harper, who made several good saves in the opening minutes.

Bewdley broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Neil Turford and Jamie Hart set up Lewis Pountney for a close range finish.

Harper maintained the home team's lead by holding onto Rhys Adam's eight-yard lob at the end of the half.

Ellesmere's pressure paid off on the hour mark when the visitors grabbed two goals in five minutes through Dan Graham and Jamie Evans.

Graham grabbed his second goal near the end, before Harper kept the score down with two more saves.

Bewdley travel to Shawbury in the league on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
