KIDDERMINSTER Victoria booked their place in the regional quarter-finals of the Cockspur National Knockout Cup by recording a 62 run win over Cheltenham in Gloucestershire on Sunday.

Inconsistent KVCC bounced back from Saturday's draw with Kenilworth Wardens in the Birmingham and District League Premier Division by booking a home clash against Frocester at Chester Road on Sunday, June 1.

The team showed that they are effective in cup competitions, with a nerveless display of bowling which restricted the home side to a small score in reply.

Captain Jonathan Wright won the toss but KVCC lost opener Phil Shaw for 12 runs after he was run out.

Sean Lloyd though kept the runs ticking and formed a strong partnership with Neil Pinner, which guided the visitors to 129, before LLoyd was bowled for 52 runs.

The runs kept flowing for KVCC as Pinner and Craig Wood picked up quick singles with good running between the wickets.

The effective partnership was broken on 163, when Pinner was bowled after hitting 70 runs.

Steady batting from Wright and Wood, who was eventually removed for 38, ensured KVCC were remaining positive.

Wright, who scored 59 not out, saw Chris Pyke removed by the second ball he faced but Andy Siwicki added a solitary run as KVCC ended their innings on 257-5.

Wright's impressive innings had given the visitors the advantage, hitting five fours and two sixes from his 42 balls.

Cheltenham's reply started badly when Arfan Khan had Wood catch opener Ben Ferbache (4).

The visitors' bowling attack was troubled by Barney Bamford, who made 40 before being ran out.

Cheltenham's batting order struggled to settle and notch up big scores, with Matt Brace (3-46) and Mark Mansell (2-25) keeping them on their toes.

The home side were never able to mount a serious challenge to overhaul KVCC's total and were bowled out in the final over on 195.

In contrast KVCC's inability to produce their best form on a challenging wicket hampered their efforts, as they went down to a losing draw to Kenilworth Wardens in the Premier Division on Saturday.

The Chester Road side struggled to settle on a slow wicket and outfield and failed to record a big enough total for Kenilworth to chase.

Wright won the toss and opted to bowl first but the home side was aided by KVCC's wayward bowling, which conceded 37 extra runs.

Mansell was the visitors' most effective bowler, taking 6-27, while stand-in wicketkeeper Phil Shaw held two early catches to remove Kenilworth's openers.

South African paceman Mario Saliwa took 2-59 but the usually reliable Ted Baylis looked out of sorts and gave away 27 runs in his five overs as Wardens made 174 all out.

After delays for rain KVCC had a target of 147 runs in 42 overs for victory.

Unfortunately, they lost wickets too easily, with openers Shaw and Lloyd back in the pavilion with only three runs on the board.

Pinner, 17, resisted the the probing of the home team's bowling attack, while Wood (10) survived for 50 minutes.

Alongside Wright, Pinner reached 65 before he was trapped lbw by John Jordan.

The experienced partnership of Wright and Mansell added a further 24 runs and gave the team some hope, but the captain was bowled for 24.

Baylis came and went for only one run and when Mansell was bowled by Jordan for 14 it looked as if KVCC might lose.

Saliwa was stumped for one, but Siwicki and Brace guided KVCC to 123-8 in the 42nd over to ensure a draw.
