KIDDERMINSTER Victoria CC got the better of Bromsgrove by nine runs to progress into the quarter-finals of the Birmingham and District League Twenty20 Challenge Cup on Wednesday night at St Godwalds.

Victory means that KVCC are only one win away from the semi-final and finals day, which are to be held at Chester Road on Sunday, September 14.

KVCC won the toss and elected to bat in unexpectedly bright weather after torrential rain in Kidderminster.

The visitors opened their innings with Mark Mansell scoring 15 of the 18 runs recorded, but was caught by Tom Hill of Nick Husband's bowling.

The partnership between Craig Wood and Neil Pinner produced 60 runs but ended when Pinner fell to a catch by Valeed Butt off Mark Evenson’s bowling for 29.

When Jonathan Wright (23) was caught by Evenson off Lyndon Jones, KVCC had reached 114 in 14 overs.

Ted Baylis, skipper of Kidderminster’s cup team, scored 19 runs before being bowled by Omar Ali.

Phil Shaw only had three balls to face and scored a boundary off the first ball with a cheeky reverse sweep.

Craig Wood provided the backbone of KVCC's innings, hitting four boundaries and a six to make 58 not out and guide his side to 164-4.

Bromsgrove openers Jayden Levitt and Omar Ali put on 61 before Ali was bowled by Baylis for 28.

Levitt looked set for a big score and reached 53 when he was bowled by Pinner.

Bromsgrove were always in with a chance and more than matched the run-rate needed for victory.

At the 10 over stage KVCC had scored 81 while Bromsgrove had gone one better with 82.

Butt was bowled by Mansell for 18 and Tom Green was caught by Wood off Mario Saliwa for 22 runs.

However, Bromsgrove were still fighting and by the 17th over had scored 140, 13 runs ahead of KVCC at the same stage.

But the host's target of 25 runs off the last three overs proved too much and they were bowled out for 155 with three balls left.

The tail-end batsmen were faced by dreadful rain and it was a credit to both teams that the game was an excellent spectacle with an exciting finish.

Mansell bowled well, taking 3-17, while Saliwa (2-28), Pinner (2-32) and Baylis (1-35) all chipped in with wickets.
