Town start with a win

JOINT manager Craig Payton was happy with his Bewdley Town side’s performance, as they kicked off pre-season with a 4-2 win over Wombourne on Tuesday night.

Bewdley’s squad and a host of players training with the club had a chance to stretch their legs and improve their fitness before the start of the West Midlands League Premier Division.

Payton is also confident that his squad is coming together and has at least 24 players training at Ribbesford Meadows and at the JJB Gym in Kidderminster, who the club have gone into partnership with.

“We had a good workout in the pre-season game and I think our plans are going well,” said Payton.

“At the moment it’s about getting the lads match fit and having a look at a few of the lads training with us.

“We have kept the players from last season and there has also been a lot of interest in us as well, because we’ve got quite a few other players with us.

“No one has actually joined us yet but it’s a good sign.”

The only injury worries that Bewdley have are striker Lewis Pountney and Craig Forbes, both of whom missed the end of last season with problems and are catching up on their fitness.

Town will also step up their pre-season preparations when they take on Tamworth at home on Saturday, August 26 and Bromsgrove Rovers on Monday, August 4.

The league fixtures for the 2008-2009 season, which starts on Saturday, August 9, are expected to be released next week.
