A GIFTED protege became the youngest person ever to win Kidderminster Golf Club’s championship.

Craig Richardson, 17, emerged triumphant from the two-day tournament with a score of 145 to secure the winner’s trophy and a cheque for £50.

The Kidderminster resident is now aiming to realise his dream and become a professional.

He hopes to take another step towards success and competed in the regional final of the Nick Faldo series at the Forest of Arden course yesterday.

If Richardson can finish in the top two then he would qualify for the grand final and give himself a chance to impress the European Ryder Cup captain.

Richardson, who has a handicap of 2.7, is one of Worcestershire’s most gifted players and has played for the county’s juniors and senior second team.

His success at Kidderminster, where he is also the club’s junior captain, earned him a call-up to the county’s senior team.

Mother Samantha Richardson said: “Craig is certainly heading in the right direction.

“He aimed to be in the top five of the championship, so he was very excited when he won it.”
