BEWDLEY Town FC continued to battle for glory on several fronts after a successful week.

High-flying Town booked their place in the Worcestershire Senior Urn final by seeing off Midland Alliance side Alvechurch 4-0 last week.

The Ribbesford Meadow side then ensured that their promotion chase in the West Midlands League Premier Division is still on track after edging Heath Town at home 1-0 on Saturday.

Victory ensured they remain second in the table, hot on the heels of Bloxwich and ahead of third-placed AFC Wulfrunians on goal difference.

This success means that Bewdley are still on the glory trail in four competitions, with Town also involved in the JW Hunt and League Cups.

They illustrated their Midland Alliance credentials by beating Worcestershre rivals Alvechurch in the last four of the Urn last Wednesday.

Striker Lewis Pountney bagged a hat-trick on a night when the biggest threat to Bewdley’s superiority was a power loss at Ribbesford Meadows near the end of the match.

Once that obstacle was overcame they ensured they will play Studley, who saw off Lye Town in the last four, in the final at Aggborough in April.

Chris Hough got the ball rolling when he opened the scoring with a fierce 20-yard effort.

Pountney had some fortune for Bewdley’s second when a cross came off his leg and flew into the back of the net.

Dan Ludlow turned provider in the second half and Pountney headed home to make it 3-0.

Alvechurch pulled a goal back but the game was interrupted when the floodlights went off.

When power was restored, Pountney made sure of victory, and his hat-trick, with another header.

Bewdley have won the county’s Junior Cup three times but reaching the Urn’s final is a sign that they are progressing.

Jointed manager Craig Payton said: “This is a brilliant achievement.

“Like Manchester United we’re on course to win four trophies this season.

“We’ve reached the final of one and are in contention in the others.

“When the lights went out we were worried because it’s never happened before, but thankfully we got the generator started again after five minutes.”

They continued their excellent form on Saturday by edging Heath 1-0.

Town went ahead in the 20th minute when Dan Jones made a fine run down the right wing and was brought down as he burst into the box.

Defender Luke Paskin made it six goals for the season (all from the spot), when he converted the penalty.

“It was a tight game but I thought we deserved the win ,” commented Payton.

“If we had taken our chances we could have won 4-0 but in the end the penalty was enough.

“If you’re top of the table then every team wants to shoot you down so I am happy to be second at the moment.

“It’s going to be very tight but with all the top three set to play each other then things could change.”

n Bewdley take on Darlaston at home in the league on Saturday and Wolverhampton Casuals in the League Cup at home on Wednesday night (7.45pm kick-off).

They also booked their place in the last eight of the JW Hunt Cup on Wednesday night after beating Heath Town 4-3 on penalties.

Mike Carter had levelled the scores before Chris Hough, Gary Middleton, Craig Webb and Lewis Pountney scored, while keeper Darren Steadman made two saves.
