KIDDERMINSTER Victoria CC slipped to fifth in the Birmingham and District League Premier Division after they suffered a five-wicket loss at the hands of improving newcomers Bromsgrove at St Godwalds on Saturday.
In a run-heavy match, KVCC's bowlers struggled to make an impact on a wicket that was more suited to the batsmen.
Defeat, the Chester Road side's second in a row, means that after looking in good shape for a title-charge a fortnight ago, KVCC are now 33 points behind leaders Knowle and Dorridge.
Only bowlers James Ralph (2-46) and captain Jonathan Wright (1-47) could be happy with their contributions, while rest of the attack toiled under the hot summer sun.
The away side's openers Craig Wood and Matt Pardoe started slowly with only 33 runs coming from the first 10 overs.
They reached the 100 mark by the 26th but lost Wood, caught by Nick Husbands and bowled by Ashley Newdick for 42.
The next partnership between Pardoe and Neil Pinner had produced 87 runs in 19 overs, KVCC were still struggling to increase the run rate as they made 187 by the 45th over.
Pinner was bowled by Husbands for 44, who then had Pardoe caught by Newdick for 104, which was the teenager's maiden century in the league.
Wright was bowled for a duck, caught by Tom Hill off Alex Kervezee, while James Ralph was caught off Husbands for just 15.
The scoreboard read 212-5 with only five overs remaining but Andy Siwicki and Ted Baylis took matters in hand and thrashed the ball to all parts of the ground.
They scored 50 runs inside five overs when Siwicki became Husband’s fourth scalp, when he was caught by Newdick.
Baylis ended on 24 not out as KVCC made a respectable 263-6.
KVCC endured a tough start as Bromsgrove openers Newdick and Kervezee forged a partnership of 122 in 21 overs.
Dutch international Kervezee was ran out for 64 and Ralph caught Jayden Levitt for a duck off Wright's ball.
At 155-2, Bromsgrove's Jordi Rose (6) was caught Pinner bowled Ralph.
Things were looking brighter for the away side, but their efforts were thwarted by the inspired Newdick, whose excellent innings came to an end on 90 when he was caught by wicketkeeper Jon Smith.
With 20 overs left, KVCC's opponents needed 85 runs to condemn them to defeat.
The away team were frustrated by Tom Friend and Tom Green's 81 fifth wicket stand.
Arfan Khan had Friend (39) caught by Smith but with Bromsgrove needing just four runs for victory they reached 265-5 in the 53rd over.
