JUDO: Hundreds of Samurai members celebrated the club’s 30th anniversary at Gilt Edge Social Club last month.

The youngest juniors took on 30 of the club’s black belts, including four fifth dans, before the higher grades tackled each other.

That was followed by an excellent social day, which included a highly competitive football tournament.

Special guests included many former members, including seven of the 11 chair persons from over the club’s 30 year history.

Great Britain star Kate Walker missed the event, as she was in Italy for the Tre Torri International Championships.

Having taken a while out for her end of year university exams, she finished in a creditable seventh place, but showed her true quality on the training camp following the event, where she comfortably beat most of the players from four continents who she came up against.

Sisters Millie and Charis Hancocks were in Crawley for the Southern Area Open Youth Championships.

Charis had some tough contests and was very pleased to pick up a bronze medal.

Her sibling won her first two contests to make the last four and a refereeing mix-up made sure she could not progress and had to settle for bronze.
