HARRIERS manager Mark Yates is hoping to secure the services of defender Gavin Caines after he produced an impressive display in Saturday's 0-0 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers development side.

Caines was one of a number of players on trial at Aggborough but the chances of securing the former Cheltentham Town man looked slim when he played for Oxford United last week.

However, Yates never ruled out the possibility of the 25-year-old returning and he did so against Wolves cubs on Saturday.

"I thought Gavin did very well. That was more what I expected of him and I always thought he could play well.

"I don't have a problem with him playing at Oxford, he told me about it and hopefully we can do something."

Caines was one of a number of positives to emerge from the match, which Harriers dominated but failed to carve out any clear cut chances.

Dean Bennett and Chris McPhee both hit the woodwork, while Wolves rarely threatened goalkeeper Dean Coleman.

"It's just another part of pre-season and it was a good work out," commented Yates.

"We might start giving a few 90 minutes to a few on Tuesday and Friday but it's about getting the group of players we've got fit.

"We've still got a few we're trying to bring in but it's just taking a bit of time.

"I felt a sorry for a few of our players because the grass was too long and it was a bit sticky.

"I thought we were the ones that went out to win the game but we've got to work at being more clinical with our passing.

"We're still trying to bring players to the club but it's taking a bit of time. As soon as that happens the better.

"We'll have a look at what we've got. We've made a decision about a few already and we've got to make sure who we bring in is right for the club."

Yates will step up his preparations for the 2009-10 season in the Blue Square Premier against Hereford at home on Tuesday night (7.45pm kick-off).

Harriers will welcome back Adam Bartlett and Keith Lowe to the club, after they left the club to join the Bulls.

"Hereford will be a good test, it will be nice to have Adam Bartlett and Keith Lowe back but we'll be concentrating on ourselves," added the manager.
