BEWDLEY CC kept their promotion chances alive in the Worcestershire League Division Two over the Bank Holiday weekend.

After a win over Monmouth on Saturday and a winning draw over Hagley on Monday, Bewdley are now fourth in the table.

With the top three in the division set to go up because of Eastnor in the Birmingham League, Bewdley are just 14 points behind Pedmore, the side directly above them, with one game left.

The two teams play each other at Bewdley on Saturday in what is effectively a winner takes all promotion play-off.

On Saturday, Bewdley bowled out Monmouth for 183 and then Simon Smith top scored with 60 as his side made 184-7 in reply.

Two days later, they were denied maximum points by Hagley, despite taking the lion’s share of the points.

Bewdley made 243 all out, with captain Simon Mauger hitting 103 but Hagley held on for 10 points by reaching 202-8 in their 50 overs.

In Division Three there wasn’t much joy for Wyre Forest sides over the long weekend.

Chaddesley Corbett had one of the best results of the weekend on Saturday with a winning draw against Stourbridge.

Corbett made 207 all out, with Rohan Vorster (56) top scoring and then kept their rivals from the Black Country to 109-9 for a winning draw.

However, they lost by 124 runs to Burghill and Tillington on Monday.

Corbett’s opponents hit 303-7 but they were unable to respond as they were bowled out for 179 in 34 overs.

Cookley experienced contrasting results, losing to Burghill on Saturday but beating Kidderminster on Monday.

On Saturday, Burghill won the toss and after electing to bat first, they made 198-8 from their allotted 50 overs.

Cookley looked well placed to chase down the runs as Steve Hawkes weighed in with 47, but a collapse saw them dismissed for 154 with nearly ten overs to spare.

On Monday, Cookley won the toss against Kidderminster at Winterfold School and made 232-3 from 50 overs, with Mark Bennett hitting a superb 103, along with good support from Ben Southall (42).

Kidderminster looked good for the target but were pegged back by the bowling of Ben Quinlan (4-56) as they were dismissed for 193, handing Cookley the full 24 points.

Cookley’s second team lost both their matches over the weekend.

The long trip to Burghill on Saturday ended fruitless despite being set only 129 for victory, Cookley collapsed to 60 all out.

Monday saw a better effort from the second string as they made 186 against Kidderminster at Lea Lane, with Ian Benbow making an impressive 45.

Stourport suffered two disappointing results at the hands of Amblecote and Wollaston and Wormelow.

On Saturday, Amblecote made 181 all out and then dismissed Stourport for 69 runs.

There was a much improved batting display on Monday, but Stourport only managed a losing draw against Wormelow.

Their opponents hit 248-8 and Stourport were kept to 218-6 in 50 overs.

n In the Division Four South, Cutnall Green and Himbleton finished the season in second and third places respectively.

Cutnall lost by 84 runs to Old Vigornians. Their opponents made 240, but Green were bowled out for 156.

That meant Himbleton could have leap-frogged their local rivals but all they could manage was a losing draw to Martley.

Martley made 260-8 but Himbleton held on for nine points by ending on 200-7, which was enough to hold off Vigornians for third place.

In Division Five, Cleobury finished in fourth place, with Brintons one place below. Bewdley ended the campaign second from bottom, with Chainwire underneath.
