RIDERS from Bewdley Motorcycle Club savoured a successful day at their latest grasstrack event in Kinver over the weekend.

Track preparations were hampered by heavy rain on Saturday morning but club officials battled through to put on a good day’s racing.

A total of 120 competitors took part in 47 races, where Bewdley’s members had a memorable day and secured a number of titles.

Kidderminster’s James Childe secured the British title in the 250cc class after being the most consistent rider over three rounds.

However, in the final race he finished third behind clubmate Tom Perry in second and winner Harland Cook from Watford.

“It has been a tough year’s racing but it has all been worth it to become champion,” commented a jubilant Childe.

In the 350cc class, Perry had a tough battle with John Jefferies, who won the class on the day.

Perry rounded off a good day to clinch the club’s 500cc title, adding it the club title in the 250cc class, and was presented with his trophies by former British Speedway champion Peter Collins.

Former Wolverhampton speedway rider Phil Ashcroft’s impressive points score ensured he managed to come third after three rounds, despite being sidelined by a racing accident, in the 500c class.

Quad bike rider Lee Hazelwood from Wolverley was unbeaten over the weekend and won his final to successfully defend the title he clinched last year.

He said: “When you are an active member of the club it puts a lump in your throat to be champion.”

Shatterford’s Mike Perkins, who is also Bewdley club secretary, finished second in the championship with some consistent riding over the three rounds.
