MANAGER Steve Burr believes a large away support could play a key role as Kidderminster Harriers try to inflict a rare double on title-chasing Oxford United on Saturday.

The U’s boast an impressive home record in the Blue Square Premier, with their only reverse a surprise defeat against Tamworth.

Burr is sure a repeat of Monday night’s impressive fans showing at Worcester City in a narrow FA Trophy victory may well be enough to inspire his side.

Harriers’ supporters came out in force to support their club at St George’s Lane and another big away following will be needed at Oxford, who have averaged attendances of over 5,000 this campaign.

The clash is also a dress rehearsal for the FA Trophy quarter-final between Harriers and Oxford at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday, February 20 (3pm kick-off).

“I thought our fans were absolutely brilliant against Worcester and I hope they show the same support for Oxford on Saturday,” said the manager.

“It’s going to be a very difficult test because they have a great home record and so they should with between 7,000 and 8,000 fans at home cheering them on.

“But we’re not going to worry about them, we’ll be concentrating on our own game.

“Obviously we’ve also got them in the FA Trophy quarter-final as well but we’ll put that to the back of our minds until later on.”

Harriers will be hoping for a repeat of November’s 3-1 home win over United as Burr and his troops concentrate on enhancing their play-off hopes.

Currently, they are ninth in the table, six points behind fifth-placed Kettering.

Burr said: “We’ve an opportunity to make the play-offs this season.

“Some of the teams above us at the minute have played a couple of games less but we’re still in a good position.

“I’m just pleased with the overall attitude of the players, there was always going to be some apprehension when I came in but they have responded really well.”

Harriers’ new manager made his first acquisition this week when he signed winger Marc Goodfellow on a season’s loan from League Two outfit Burton Albion.

The 28-year-old could play some part in Saturday's Conference clash.

Monday’s Trophy win gave Harriers a £7,000 boost, but with funds tight at Aggborough the manager had to loan out defender Liam Dolman to Corby for a month to allow him to bring in Goodfellow.

Burr may also try to bring more players in when the loan window opens again next week, but will have to offset any new additions by sending out members of his squad.

He also ruled out a move for Chester City defender Rhys Meynell, after a temporary move to Harriers fell through.

“There was a chance to get Rhys in but it doesn’t look as though it’s going to happen because of the situation at Chester,” said Burr.

“The way things are, we have to get one out before we can get another player in, but there may be some new faces when the loan window opens next week.

“Liam Dolman has gone out on loan to Corby and that helped us get Marc Goodfellow in.”

Burr is also searching to bolster his backroom staff, despite bringing in former Blackburn Rovers and England keeper Tim Flowers to work with Jasbir Singh and Dean Coleman.

He is hoping Flowers will coach the duo on a regular basis.

n Harriers’ home clash with Barrow in the league has been rearranged for Tuesday, April 13.

n They continue on the cup trail on Monday, when they go to Worcester in the Worcestershire Senior Cup (7.45pm kick-off).
