KIDDERMINSTER’S Winspers Gym has seen their students succeed on a number of different fronts.

A five-strong team returned from Ireland triumphant after a kickboxing tournament in Dublin.

Coach Matt Winsper was behind the team, consisting of Nina Das Gupta, Mathew Lees, Greg Langson, Jon Weaver and Andy Dunn and guided them to victory over their Irish competitors.

Das Gupta was first up in a ladies semi-contact match, winning a comprehensive decision.

Sixteen-year-old Lees got the better of someone who had beaten him in a karate contest last year 11-3, while Langston, 21, beat a Cork fighter 10-6.

Heavyweight Jon Weaver, 19, who trains at the Eclipse gym in Wolverley, fought hard to take an 18-11 verdict.

Andy Dunn took part in a three round full-contact match for the vacant European Welterweight title, clinching it with a 25-20 win in the final round.

A trio from Winspers Gym also attended the WAKO British Kickboxing Championships in Nottingham.

Dave Hylton, Megan Upton and Charlotte Upton all won medals in their divisions to gain automatic entry onto the Great Britin team competing in the World Amateur Championships later this year.

Lees continued his good form by seeing off a Birmingham-based figther in a full-contact kickboxing bout in Ellesmere Port.

The Winspers fighter lost the first round but bounced back to win the next two and scored two knockdowns late on.
