KIDDERMINSTER Harriers are waiting to hear back from top scorer Brian Smikle after offering him a contract for next season.

The 24-year-old has been one of Harriers’ most consistent performers after bagging 13 goals so far.

He is one of a number of players that Burr would like to secure for the 2010-11 Conference campaign.

The Aggborough outfit are set for a summer of change as Harriers’ new manager looks to revamp his squad.

Burr has been handed a small budget to re-build and admits that with potential new signings set to shop around to get the best deal, he may have to hold his nerve until pre-season starts.

“The budget is quite tight to be fair so we’re going to have to make sure we get the balance right in the squad,” commented the manager.

“I have to look at everyone and make sure we have a squad that is capable of challenging.

“We have put an offer to Brian [Smikle] and ultimately the decision rests with him in regards to what he wants to do.

“There’s going to be a lot of players available in the summer and we might have to offer them something, let them look around elsewhere, before they come back to us in pre-season.”

Burr has Robbie Matthews, player/coach John Finnigan, Jack Byrne and Chris McPhee contracted for next season, but he has not ruled out selling one of those quartet to bolster his spending power.

He said: “I will have to look at selling players if I get offers. It may be because of the budget and wages but we’ll have to see if that situation arises.”

The manager is set to shuffle the captain’s armband for the remaining four games of the campaign, after trying Martin Riley at Barrow on Thursday and Lee Baker at Gateshead on Saturday.

Chris McPhee had been captain for most the season, but the Harriers boss is set to try out others for tonight’s clash at Hayes and Yeading (7.45pm kick-off), Saturday’s Aggborough clash against Stevenage Borough (3pm kick-off) and Tuesday night’s home game Barrow (7.45pm kick-off).

He said: “Martin was captain on Thursday and I wanted to have a look at Lee on Saturday and I may change around again the in final few games.

“I have always had captains who have been a leader on and off the pitch and that is something I will need to assess in the summer.”
