BEWDLEY moved away from the bottom of Division One after they ended the Bank Holiday weekend with a 107 run win over fellow strugglers Colwall on Monday.

After their game against Bromyard on Saturday was abandoned without a ball being bowled in anger, they responded with a fine all-round display against Colwall that pushed them away from the bottom two and into mid-table.

Simon Smith and captain Rob Combes ensured that Bewdley overcame a slow start to take the initiative.

The pair took the score to 74 and then Martyn Carr joined Smith in a crucial partnership, batting with more caution than normal, as they added 64 in 14 overs.

When they both fell after Carr was ran out for 28, and Smith bowled for 76, Bewdley’s tail wagged usefully, and they were all out in the last over for 190.

Smith’s innings contained six fours and two sixes, and he batted flawlessly for two hours.

Colwall’s response started badly and they were bowled out for 83 in 30 overs.

Carr was the star of the show finishing with 7-47, and Colwall failed completely to get to grips with his seam and swing.

Tom Baylis supported him well with 2-28, and Jack Mills took a crucial wicket.

The seconds also enjoyed the winning feeling on Monday as they saw off Feckenham by seven wickets to rise to second in the Division Two table.

Ewan Peer (1-51 off 17) and Sam Beasley (2-52) laid the foundations with impressive opening spells, with Dave Jones and Mark Hudson picking up a couple of wickets each to restrict their opponents towards the death, as Feckenham reached a below-par 196-7 off their 50 overs.

Bewdley suffered an early setback with the loss of Ben Jones Snr but a superb second-wicket partnership of 155 between Martin Flack (76 not out) and Simon Jones (76) steered Bewdley to the brink, eventually reaching their total with 3 overs to spare.  Chaddesley Corbett had a weekend of contrasts in Division Two but they started with a one run win over Birlingham on Saturday.

They had made 216 all out in their allotted 44 overs, reduced because of rain, with Tom Boden top scoring with 65 not out.

He and Sam Boden shared the first three Birlingham wickets and Corbett's opponents slumped from a promising 112-2 to 150-6.

Dave Perry (5-75) then mopped up the tail end, removing Lincoln Fensmore in the 44th over to leave Birlingham on 215 all out.

On Monday, Corbett earned some points in a losing draw against Enville. Their opponents made 226-2, but Chaddesley replied with 163-7.
