Harriers boss Steve Burr admits the departure of striker Robbie Matthews to Newport County has freed up some much needed cash to boost his squad.

Matthews, who had a year left on his contract, joined the newly-promoted Newport County after his deal was cancelled by mutual concent.

The hitman joined Harriers last season but a disappointing return of six goals meant Harriers boss Steve Burr transfer listed the former Salisbury forward in May.

The 6ft 4in centreforward did bag vital goals against Oxford and Mansfield, including the winner at the Kassam in the FA Trophy quarter-final, but failed to live up to the responsibility of being the main striker after the departure of Matthew Barnes-Homer to Luton.

Burr said: "I want to wish Robbie well.

"In terms of location it is probably better for him to be a bit nearer to home.

"I've no problem with him, he's worked hard in training, unfortunately it did not work out for him.

"It has freed up quite a bit of cash, we will probably be able to add two or three players."

Harriers start training on Monday, giving the new signings their first chance to meet their teammates.
