Bewdley held by Barnards Green

A winning draw against Division One title-chasers Barnards Green was enough to keep in-form Bewdley away from the relegation zone on Saturday.

The eight points earned from another fine all-round display ensured the third from bottom outfit have a nine-point lead over Colwall, who pulled off a surprising win over leaders Worcester at the weekend.

Bewdley’s innings was built around a season’s best 94 not out from Gareth Lewis with useful supporting roles from Rob Combes (51) and Andy Baylis (34).

Lewis was at his powerful best, and his innings included 10 fours and a six.

Baylis helped him add 76 for the fourth wicket and again batted very comfortably.

Ben Jones Jnr added impetus at the end and the total of 246-5 was always going to be a challenge.

Sam Beasley and Tom Baylis bowled tightly at the start of the Barnards Green innings, and Mike Harris was again in good form, but it was Jack Mills who made in-roads with a fine spell of slow left arm bowling.

Mills finished with 5-71 and Barnards Green found themselves kept to 198-7.

Bewdley also recorded a 10-wicket win over Chaddesley Corbett in the 2nd XI Division Two.

After winning the toss, Bewdley got stuck into Chaddesley's line-up with Robert Crane (3-36) and Cyril Ramsay (2-42) taking early wickets. David Jones (3-23) and Mark Hudson (2-31) kept up the pressure as none of home side's batsmen could make any impact and they were eventually all out for 138.

Ben Jones Snr (85 not out) and Martin Flack (46 not out), steered their side to a comfortable win.

In the first XI Division Three, second-placed Kidderminster Victoria moved to within 11 points of leaders Wormelow after a 219 run thrashing of Birlingham.

Impressive knocks of 96 by Jamien Rudd and 72 by Ryan Derrick guided KVCC to 311-6 in 50 overs.

The bowlers made light work of Birlingham, with Steve Yarsley standing out with five wickets for three runs, while Kevin Amos and Andy Cavendish took two each as KVCC's bowlers reduced to 92 all out.

Stourport have risen to third after a four-wicket win over Enville.

Tight bowling from Bevan Neill and Craig Siwicki set Stourport on their way to victory as Enville were bowled out for 193 in 48.4 overs.

Stourports opener Neil Bailey started strongly with the bat, scoring 34 to help set a base, before Dave Cook (44) formed a strong partnership with captain Craig Siwicki (64).

The second team lost by five wickets to Monmouth, who secured victory with one ball to spare.

Stourport batted first on a fantastic track and posted 267-9 in their 50 overs, with Alan Lockwood scoring 118 and Chris Young 52.

Monmouth made 272-5 in reply.

Chaddesley Corbett lost by four wickets to Canon Frome.

Corbett were bowled out for 172 and they opponents made 176-6 in reply.

Cookley's promotion hopes were dented when they were edged out by eight runs at home to Avoncroft.

Avoncroft were dismissed for 191 with two balls remaining of their allotted 50 overs, as Ben Quinlan (5-66) did the damage with the ball for Cookley.

But the hosts fell short in their run chase and would have required eight from the last over, had they not lost their final wicket shortly before.

The second team were comfortable victors over Romsley & Hunnington at Lea Lane on Sunday by five wickets. The visitors made 139 all out as a devastating bowling spell of 4-8 from Will Cooper did the damage.

Eastaugh was again in good form, hitting 41 not out, while Jon Harrison (26) and Rob Laidler (25 not out) got amongst the runs in Cookley's successful run chase.
