KIDDERMINSTER golfer Ethan Davies is really getting into the swing of things after finishing runner-up at a Midlands competition.

The eight-year-old St Ambrose RC pupil first picked up a plastic club when he was a toddler and has developed a real knack for the game.

He had his first cut-down iron at the age of three-and-a-half and has been a member of professional Russell Adams' junior academy for two years.

And Ethan showed his promise by grabbing second place in the Young Master Golf Midlands competition on the Hadzar course at Gaudet Luce in Droitwich.

Each player was given a set number of shots to get as far around the course as possible with the youngest, like Ethan, starting with the most.

In 42 strokes, Ethan, who regularly studies top golfers' swings on television and computer games, made it to the eighth hole where he sunk his putt with his final shot.

"He's quite tall for his age but there's no weight to him so it's all about his timing rather than his strength," said his father, Melvyn, a member of Little Lakes Golf Club, in Bewdley.

"His coach says that everything he does on the golf course is so natural."

l A golf ball belonging to 12-year-old Josh Carpenter has taken pride of place on his mum's telly after his first hole in one.

The Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club junior achieved the ace in a Wyre Forest League match at Bromsgrove Golf Club.

Josh used a five wood for the spectacular tee shot at the par three 174 yard seventh hole.

But although Josh and playing partner John Gittins won their match the team lost 4.5-1.5, ending their hopes of making the semi-finals.
