A SPONSORS golf tournament managed to raise thousands of pounds for Stourport Swifts at Kidderminster GC last week.

Sponsored by OGL Computer and The Big Print Shop, the event saw 22 teams of four from local businesses, including Hire It and Phipps and Pritchard, raise just over £2,000 for the Walshes Meadow outfit.

Teams were led by Patrick Smith, Kidderminster GC’s professional and club, manager Rod Brown and former boss Phil Mullen.

Prizes were given from the first to the fifth-placed team, and the prize ceremony took place after a lunch.

Organiser of the event, and Swifts committee member Lionel Newton said: “It is essential for a club like Swifts to hold events such as this in order to raise vital funds, and having OGL sponsor it is a tremendous gesture that is appreciated by everyone involved with the football club.”

OGL marketing manager Alex Byles said: “OGL Computer has been a keen supporter of Stourport Swifts for a number of years, amongst our support for other initiatives in the Wyre Forest, and we were delighted to be involved with the golf day at Kidderminster and sponsor the event.

“Despite the changeable conditions, it was an excellent day with the proceeds going to the support of football in the local area, and OGL Computer’s own team played very well.”

n Dave Brelsforth and Mark Humphreys were the clear winners in the May stableford at Cleobury Mortimer.

Conditions were very tough and this was reflected by the scores with only three players shooting under their handicaps.

Andy Johnson thought he had done enough with 37 points, but Brelsforth blew the field away with a massive 41 points to give him Division One.

In Division Two, Mark Humphreys shot-38 points to pip John Haywood by three shots.

n Jenny Taylor and Jane Gummer will represent Ombersley for the first time in the national Australian Spoons Competition, which is a stableford foursomes competition for ladies with handicaps between 21 and 36.

The event is ran by the English Women’s Golf Association. The duo scored 37 points, beating a field of 28 players to go forward to the next round at Carswell Golf Club, Oxfordshire on Thursday, July 7.
