MANAGER Steve Burr has backed his Harriers young guns to impress once again in the Blue Square Bet Premier 2011-12 campaign.

Burr has had a busy summer of squad building so far, with this week's capturing of Luke Medley, Mickey Demetriou and James Vincent ensuring the Aggborough outfit already has 19 players signed up before the start of pre-season.

However, with Keith Briggs joining Fleetwood and Chris McPhee set to depart the club Harriers boast an extremely youthful looking squad.

In fact only well-travelled, vastly experienced striker Steve Guinan, 36, is the only player in the squad in his 30s.

Last season, Burr saw a youthful group of players just miss out on the play-offs and once again, he will be urging his young group to aim high.

"It's going to be a very young squad this season, with only Steve Guinan in his 30s," commented the manager.

"That's why we brought him in because he's got tons of experience which he can pass onto the lads and he can also play a big part on the pitch too.

"We've continued what we did last season and brought in young hungry players with something to prove.

"Other teams may be bringing in players with more experience but I am happy with the lads we have brought in.

"Signing a player doesn't always mean they work out but I am hopeful with the new faces we have added and will work hard in pre-season to gel all the players together.

"We need to name a captain but there are a number of candidates. Tom Marshall, Scott Phelan and Luke Jones have all worn the armband at their previous clubs and we have natural leaders like Mike Williams here as well."

Despite a productive summer in the market, Harriers' management team have been careful to stick to their budget and look for bargains.

This is in stark contrast to the likes of Fleetwood, York and Wrexham, who have spent big, despite the Welsh side's close brush with a winding up order in May.

Burr admitted Harriers cannot compete financially with the Conference's big spenders but believes he can entice players for other reasons.

He said: "The summer has gone quite well, we've been able to bring a few players in.

"We've not got everyone we wanted unfortunately, there have been times when we haven't been able to compete with other clubs on wages.

"But we can sell the club, I always tell a player that they will enjoy playing here, in a good stadium, backed by supportive fans.

"We're still looking a bringing in a goalkeeper. There are a number we are talking to but it could be a matter what we can offer them and what they are looking for.

"As always there are clubs who are spending a lot of money on players.

"That's up to them, we can't worry about how much other team's spend as we have a budget we will stick to.

"I've spoken with Mark [Serrell] and we're on track regarding our spending, which is the most important thing.

"We're still looking for players, we may have quite a few signed up but we will still be looking at trialists in pre-season and may hold back a bit of the budget until the nearer the season.

"There's always someone who come available a bit later on so we'll see what happens."

Burr also conceded McPhee was likely to join another club this summer. Harriers offered him a deal at the end of the season but the Newton Abbot-based midfielder, who scored 18 goals for Harriers last season, is keen to move to a Football League club closer to home.
