HUNDREDS of fans from Kidderminster and Stourbridge celebrated the life of former Harriers centre back Chris Jones by attending his memorial match.

Over 200 supporters came out in force to watch a Harriers team made up of legends such as Paul Davies, Kim Casey and Jon Purdie take on a Glassboys side.

Worcester City manager Carl Heeley also put aside local rivalry to play for Harriers.

In the end, Harriers edged a thrilling encounter 6-5, with Paul Webb (2), Casey (2), Davies and Purdie on the scoresheet.

They came up against a Stourbridge team made of players who had won the Southern League Midlands Division Championship in 1991 and Barclays Commercial Services Cup in 1993, of which Jones was a pivotal player.

Micky Williams, Simon Russon, Alan Potter and Toby Hall (2) were on target for the home side at the War Memorial ground.

The game also raised over £600 through gate receipts and programme sales, which will be donated to Wolverhampton’s Compton Hospice, who cared for Jones until he lost his battle with cancer aged just 56 in September.

A raffle held on the day was also set to raise more cash for the hospice.

Former Harriers striker Mick Tuohy, who helped to organise the game, said: “The weather was good so we had a few more people than expected at the game.

“It was a thrilling game and a chance for people to put behind them some disagreements in the past.

“It was a great day and it’s just a shame that the one person who would have really enjoyed it wasn’t there.”

Tuohy is now looking at ways to raise money for charity in honour of Jones, who enjoyed a successful spell at Aggborough during the mid-80s and was part of the squad which won the FA Trophy in 1988.

He added: “I think it would be great if we can raise money for good causes in the future in honour of Chris.

“At this moment in time I am thinking about how we might do it.

“It could be I do something before the end of the year.”

The match was also attended by Jones’ wife Andrea and children Charlotte and Oliver.
