Sholing 2, Stourport Swifts 0

A late Jack McCarthy effort wrapped up a hard-fought win for promotion chasing Sholing.

But Swifts produced a battling display with defender Jamie Willetts leading by example.

Indeed, it was the visitors who had the majority of the chances before the break with Lewis Pountney and Tim Jacuson both being denied by home keeper Dave Marden.

Lee Wort went close for Sholing on the half-hour with a lob that crept the wrong side of the post while Stourport keeper Haydn Whitcombe saved well from Barry Mason.

The breakthrough goal came on 62 minutes and it was Wort who atoned for his earlier miss, firing home from the edge of the area.

Stourport had chances to level with Jacuson skimming the top of the bar with an effort while Louis Bridges rattled the woodwork following good work from Pountney, But the Swifts’ cause was not helped by having midfielder Calvin Dinsley sent off three minutes from time after picking up a second booking.

The home side made sure of victory in injury time when McCarthy powered a shot beyond Whitcombe from 12 yards.
