SWASH-BUCKLING fly-half Andy McLellan has been described by head coach Ian Bletcher as ‘absolutely outstanding’ after his 31-point haul inspired Kidderminster Carolians to victory over Leamington on Saturday.

McLellan scored four converted tries and kicked a penalty as KCs eased their relegation worries in the Midlands Division Two West (South) with a 46-10 win at Marlpool Lane.

With two games left, KCs are now fourth from bottom and nine points ahead of Pershore, who are two places below.

Bletcher was delighted with the impact of the KCs stalwart since he was switched from full-back to fly-half.

“Andy McLellan was absolutely outstanding,” commented Bletcher.

“What impressed me most was that he was disappointed with the points he missed, not just pleased with the ones he scored.

“I’ve worked with some great players but he’s the hardest worker I know.

“He’s first to arrive at training and last to leave and the hits he puts on forwards are remarkable.

“Andy is brave. I sometimes worry as he tackles people twice his size.

“He’s a great example to everyone at the club.”

KCs now go into an Easter tour of Holland in good spirits ahead of the final two league games of the season.

A win at Pershore on Saturday, April 14 could ensure their survival.

However, Bletcher has set high standards for his players to meet.

He said: “We are in a mini-league and our target is not lose a game and try to top it.

“At the moment we’ve drawn one and won one with two games to go.

“We’re not safe yet and we’ve got to make sure we end the season with some momentum and use that in pre-season.”

Bletcher was also quick to praise the hard work of chairman of rugby Adrian Taft and director of rugby Phil Knowles, who have worked hard to ensure four teams could play at the weekend.

“Last weekend we had four teams playing, that says an awful lot,” added the head coach.

“Even the bigger clubs are struggling to put sides out but we’re getting over 30 players in training.

“The work Adrian Taft and Phil Knowles are doing is exceptional.”
