Golf round-up

IN spite of the rain, 90 ladies took part in Bewdley Pines Ladies Open Betterball Stableford competition, which was won by Bridgnorth duo Norma Stiles and Mary Pacey.

Home pair Cathy Watkins and Sue Cooper (92) were second on count-back, edging club-mates Maureen Bailey and Jo Crow into third.

Nearest the line on the 10th was Margaret Harris from Ludlow and nearest the pin on the 18th was Chris Urry from The Worcestershire.

Ladies Saturday April Medal was won by Karen Oakley with 88-22-66, followed in second by Dawn John (89-16-73) and third-placed Lindsey Granger (110-36-74).

At Cleobury Mortimer, Alex Barnes secured his first win of the season with a six-under to win the men’s April bogey.

Mark Shorter, two-under, and Martin Cleaver, three-under, took third and second respectively.

Barnes has taken many junior lessons at Cleobury, his practice and determination is really showing now with some consistent scoring and handicap reductions.

He said: “I hope to get my handicap down to 12 this year, I am practicing a lot and taking lessons which I hope will help me get there.”
