ANGLING: MOORLANDS Farm fishery manager Mal Watson was crowned the inaugural winner of the Decathlon Fishery Challenge when he weighed in 55 lbs to beat nine fishery employees in the unique new angling competition.

The match took place on the neutral venue of the Stella Lake at Shatterford Fishery, in Kidderminster, with competitors from across the Midlands contending with heavy rain, lightning and strong winds.

Watson is regarded as one of the area's most versatile match anglers and showed why by using a method he has little experience of at Moorlands Farm.

The 49-year-old took his winning catch fishing a small groundbait feeder, with worm on the hook, cast to the margins of the Stella Lakes sunken island.

He had bream to 4lbs, along with smaller skimmers and roach as a steady procession of fish came to the net during the five-hour contest.

Result: Mal Watson (Moorlands Farm) 55-0-0 (peg 10), Ed Warren (Izaak Walton) 29-4-0 (11), Dave Hill (Hillview) 16-2-0 (9).
