BEWDLEY Town came through two hard fought games to book themselves in the next round of the FA Cup.

The Ribbesford Meadow outfit finally saw off Brocton in last night’s replay with a 1-0 win, thanks to striker Chris Hough ’s first goal of the season.

That had came on the back of a hard fought 2-2 draw at the Staffordshire outfit, where a brace from central defender Richard Costello saw them battle back from 2-0 down and give themselves another chance.

They now face Wellington away in the prelimary round of the competition on Saturday, August 25. The Shropshire outfit edged out Highgate United 6-5 on penalties on Tuesday night.

Joint-manager Craig Payton was full of praise for his players, epecially as first team stalwarts Dan Flowers, Richard Burgess and Costello all picked up injuries ahead of the replay in a five-a-side clash.

That meant Bewdley had to draft in rookies Dan Gittings, Sam Prescott and Dan Sinton.

Payton said: “In the first game we had to change things a bit in the second-half but Richard Costello got a couple of goals to keep us in the cup.

“The replay was end-to-end but it was good to see Chris Hough open his account for the season.

“Over the 180 minutes I think we just about deserved to go through.

“I was also pleased for the young lads who were threw on Tuesday, they gave their all for the cause.

“I wasn’t very happy when I learned we’d lost three first team players after a five-a-side game but we’ve got through the tie and it’s all forgotten now.”

If Town can progress beyond Wellington then they will meet either Evesham or Leek Town in the first qualifying round. Bewdley also pocketed £1,000 prize money for seeing off Brocton.

Meanwhile, they turn their attentions to two home games in the West Midlands League Premier Division as they look to build on an unbeaten start to the campaign.

They entertain Shifnal on Saturday (3pm ko) and Lye on Tuesday night (7.45pm kick-off).
