Duo receive GB call ups

STOURPORT fencers Alix Turley and Danielle Lawson have been selected to represent Great Britain after both excelled at the Manchester Cadet tournament in Bolton at the weekend.

The pair will form part of a 12 strong British Cadet squad to compete in Grenoble during November after Lawson won the Under-17 epeeists section, while Alix finished fifth.

Competing in a 60-strong field, the 14-year-old dispatched her opponents in style on her way to the final where she lined up against Jessica Grundy, of Wellington Swords, who was ranked second on the British Cadet list.

She faced a daunting task as Grundy is two years older and stands six inches taller.

Yet the outcome was never in doubt once the fight commenced, Lawson proving a clear winner.

As a result of this success, she has now risen to number two in the ranking list with only Grundy above her.

Turley also made light of the opposition until she came up against Hannah Nesbit, of Newcastle, in the last eight.

There was little to chose between both girls as the advantage swung either way. At the end of contest, the scores were level and the fight went into extra-time.

Turley lost priority during this period and launched a determined attack, which was parried and a scruffy scuffle ensured which resulted with her opponents light coming on.

It meant she missed out on a place in the semi-finals, finishing true to her seeding in fifth spot.

Stourport Fencing Club meet every Friday evening at the Leisure Centre from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. If anyone fancies trying their hand at fencing, they are welcome to join in.
