KIDDERMINSTER Harriers face a striker selection dilemma for Saturday's Vanarama National League game against Gateshead.

With Reece Styche suspended for one game after his two yellow cards in Tuesday's defeat to Wrexham, the Reds need to find someone who can lead the line.

Striker Craig Reid could be drafted in for his second start of the season but he is playing catch-up in terms of fitness.

Rookie Gurjit Singh is pushing for his first ever start after impressive cameos against Dover, Guiseley and Wrexham.

Manager Gary Whild has stressed how important it is to ease in Singh, who was playing at step five of the Non-League pyramid for Tipton Town.

The Reds boss has other options, with Aman Verma able to play up front.

“We’ve done the right thing with Gurjit, he was playing at a very low level last year, so you have to ease people in,” said assistant manager Mark Creighton.

“When we played West Brom and Birmingham in pre-season, he looked a bit lost but in the five weeks that have followed he’s progressed very nicely.

“He wants to listen and is showing glimpses of why he scored so many goals last year. He showed that at Dover.

“He’s not afraid of making a mistake and he’ll keep having a go.

“Everyone has to fight for his place.

Craig has struggled a bit with his fitness over the summer. Unfortunately for Craig, the position he plays in means he’s got to be able to get around the pitch.

“We’re working with him on fitness and he’s technically very good when he gets into the 18-yard box."

Harriers have picked up just a point from the first four games and face another tough clash in the North East (3pm ko) against a Heed side, who have won three out of four.

“We are quite entertaining and we’re not getting run ragged by teams,” he said.

“It is the fine lines in football we are not getting right, they are miniscule and the smallest thing can change the outcome of a game."

Harriers have also added left-back Andrew Fox on loan for a month from Peterborough, covering for the injured Rob Taylor.

Meanwhile, the club are waiting for the doctor’s verdict over defender Kelvin Langmead.

The experienced central defender has not featured since limping off against Grimsby with a heel injury.

Creighton said: “We are waiting on some feedback. We could do with him playing because we’ve conceded from a lofted ball into the box.

“If you had put Kelvin in against Dover and Guiseley, we’d definitely have got something from both games.

“His experience and leadership are invaluable and that’s the reason we’ve got him at the club.”
