THERE was a disappointing lack of gloss on Harriers’ performance at Blackpool on Sunday – and it was a Matt finish that pointed the way to an FA Cup first round exit.

Former Aggborough hitman Jamille Matt, who was given his chance in professional football by Kidderminster in 2011, showed no room for sentiment as he opened the scoring for the League Two hosts in the 27th minute.

But he later revealed he could have been substituted just before he buried a classic header to grab his first goal for his latest employers.

The 27-year-old striker, who joined the Seasiders from neighbouring Fleetwood in the summer, said: “It was good to score my first goal for Blackpool but I got a knock on my hip a couple of minutes earlier and I was trying to run it off.

“The goal came from a throw-in and I read what Kyle Vassell was going to do with a quick cross into the box. I just got up earlier than the defenders and so I was happy with that.”

But the 6ft 1in striker failed to shrug off his injury and limped out of the action just eight minutes later.

He said: “It was good to score my first goal for Blackpool but it was one of those against a former club. I didn’t plan to celebrate it but I got a bit caught up in the moment because we really wanted to get into the second round.

“Fair play to Kidderminster, we knew they played good football and would come here very enthusiastic and come to pass the ball around.

“They started quite well but we dealt with their main threats and they never got in behind us.

“We felt we had to match their enthusiasm and workrate and believed eventually our quality would show through and that’s how it turned out.”

Matt suffered a succession of injury troubles after leaving Aggborough for Fleetwood in a £300,000 deal in 2013, but is now enjoying a run in the starting line-up at Bloomfield road.

He added: “Injuries are part and parcel of the game but I’m now looking to pick myself up. We have a good squad at Blackpool, and we’re trying to climb the table and get promoted this year.”
