Chairman insists Harriers live in their means

CHAIRMAN Barry Norgrove believes Harriers must find new ways to compete with some of their big spending rivals in the Blue Square Premier.

While Oxford and York City have extensively strengthened their squad in the close season, Harriers have been scouring the transfer market for good quality free agents.

The club have secured Matthew Barnes-Homer and Dean Coleman but are poised to add a host of players when players' contracts finish at the end of the month.

The chairman though appreciates fans' frustration but insisted that Harriers have to live within their financial means.

Last season, the Aggborough club averaged crowds of 1,600, which was a slight improvement on previous seasons.

"What the fans like to see is a successful Harriers team," said Norgrove.

"Don't get me wrong I do as well, there's nothing more that I'd want to see is promotion but the fans have to realise that it's a difficult job for a club our size.

"There's people throwing a lot more money at clubs than we are and they're bigger clubs with better crowds.

"We've got to get on with it and do the best we can and I think we're doing a good job.

"I've been chairman for four seasons and in that time we've been to Wembley and just missed out on the play-offs."

With season ticket sales lower than at the same point as last year, the chairman is also hoping a strong start to the season will attract back the fans reluctant to spend their money because of the recession.

He said: "Season ticket sales are down a little bit compared to last year but I think that's down to the recession.

"Financially it's tight out there and people can't afford to buy a bulk season ticket.

"If we're successful, put out a good team and play some exciting football the fans will start to come."
