Byrne glad to be back on song

GOAL-SCORER Jack Byrne is enjoying his football again after a disrupted first half to the season.

The 23-year-old made it four goals in five games since his return to the side, when he bagged winner against Forest Green Rovers in Boxing Day's tight clash at Aggborough.

Byrne had been eager to make up for lost time after missing two months after a serious bout if gastroenteritis laid him low.

His goal ensured Harriers are one of three teams locked on 45 points, although inferior goal-difference has them outside the play-offs in sixth-place behind York and Luton.

He said: "It's good to be back and scoring goals and I'm enjoying my football at the moment.

"I've been out for a while now and it's good to be back and scoring goals as well.

"You can do all the fitness you want but it's games that get you to the maximum, so I've been playing as many as I can and scoring goals has ensured I am selected for the team."

Much sought after striker Jamille Matt, who was the subject of three bids from Northampton Town in December, also set-up Byrne's goal with an unselfish header.

"Jamille [Matt] did lay it off for me because I called for it," revealed Byrne.

"It was too tight an angle for himself and he was stretching a bit so it wasn't a fluke.

"We dominated the game and had a few chances but it was vital to get the goal.

"Even after there were a couple more we could have taken if we had been more clinical but we deserved the goal to be fair."

Harriers will be aiming to make it a festive double when they take on Forest Green at the New Lawn on New Year's Day (3pm kick-off).

On "You want to take maximum points after two difficult back-to-back games and it was key for us to follow-up from York because it was a great victory at their place," added Harriers' match-winner.
