GRAYS V HARRIERS
- Kick off: 7:00am Sat 22 Aug 09
- Venue: New Recreation Ground
- Final score:
- Grays Athletic 1 - 3 Kidderminster Harriers
94:00: Final whistle That's the perfect way to end a goal drought, three goals at a bogey ground. Harriers more than deserved this win for their excellent first half performance. It was grittier in the second half but the third goal sealed victory.
91:00: It was good play by Harriers. Matthew Barnes-Homer send Brian Smikle skipping into the right side of the box. He sent in a cross and David McDermott stabbed it into the back of the net at the far post.
90:00: Goal! David McDermott seals it!
87:00: Brian Smikle fires a 20-yard effort just wide.
86:00: There's relief all round as Jamie Slabber controls the ball on the right of the box but his cross evades everyone.
85:00: Harriers' defence blocks Daniel Charge as he tries to shoot on the edge of the area. Duane Courtney then puts off Serge Makofo with a block as he tries to shoot.
83:00: Substitution Harriers' fans give John Finnigan a deserving round of applause when he is replaced by Liam Dolman.
81:00: The game has lost a bit of tempo but at 2-1 a goal for either side could have a big impact on the game.
77:00: Good take by Dean Coleman to reach and hold onto Tommy Black's free-kick.
76:00: Substitution Grays midfielder Ronnie Bull is replaced by Sam Long.
72:00: Substitution Darryl Knights replaces Dean Bennett.
70:00: Harriers have a free-kick afer a foul on Chris McPhee. From 30-yards out Matthew Barnes-Homer sends it high over the bar.
66:00: David McDermott gets the pass off Duane Courtney. Instead of slipping it to the full-back as he broke free down the right wing he goes for goals and is wide of the mark.
61:00: So close! David McDermott delivers a good cross from the right. Martin Riley's far post header hits the post and falls to Chris McPhee. He fires goalwards but Jamie Slabber clears off the line.
59:00: Substitution Grays have added a man in midfield and that seem to have denied Harriers some space. Serge Makofo replaces Craig Braham-Barrett.
58:00: After being stunned by the goal, Harriers have taken a while to recover. David McDermott does well control Chris McPhee's cross and find Dean Bennett, who thumps a shot wide.
54:00: Substitution Mark Yates doesn't hang about and takes off Kyle Hadley for David McDermott.
52:00: That goal looked a result of poor commumnication by Harriers. Dean Coleman was rooted to the spot and should have been more decisive.
51:00: Brian Smikle is offside after linking up well with Matthew Barnes-Homer.
50:00: Goal! Harriers are caught out far too easily by a long ball forward. Daniel Charge races past Martin Riley and slams a shot past Dean Coleman.
49:00: John Finnigan really is a classy midfielder. His distribution of the ball is neat and fluid and reading of situations excellent.
47:00: Ronnie Bull needs treatment after some battling for the ball. He seems okay to carry on.
46:00: Lovely interplay between Chris McPhee and John Finnigan. The swap passes and McPhee sees a low shot easily saved by the keeper.
46:00: Substitution Richard Graham is replaced by Tommy Black in Grays' midfield.
46:00: Talk about contrasts. Harriers' players are eagerly warming up on the pitch for the second half, while Grays sheepishly trudge on.
45:00: Half time Plus one min: That's the first half over with. Manager Mary Yates' only complaint will be they should have score more. Otherwise it's been a fine performance by Harriers.
45:00: Gavin Caines rises unchallenged to meet a left-wing cross but heads over. That should have been 3-0.
44:00: Harriers come close again. Kyle Hadley slips in a lovely ball from the right that Chris McPhee slides in for but he's blocked by a desperate Cameron Mawer.
43:00: John Finnigan is having a big impact on this match. He screws a shot wide from distance after concerted Harriers pressure. Moments later he leads a break and finds Brian Smikle on the left. He cuts in and curls a shot into the keeper's arms.
40:00: Harriers are trying to take advantage of some poor defending by the hosts. Grays' back four have backed off the likes of Matthew Barnes-Homer and Chris McPhee.
40:00: Good pressure from Harrieres results into Dean Bennett shooting over the bar. It was great stuff as Duane Courtney sent in a cross after linking up well with Kyle Hadley.
36:00: Richard Graham curls a free-kick from 30-yards out just wide. Dean Coleman looked as though he had it covered though.
32:00: Jamie Slabber is told off after mouthing off at the referee. The striker's annoyed that Martin Riley goes to ground as the duo battle for a Richard Graham Corner.
30:00: Brian Smikle almost scores again. From Kyle Hadley's corner he swings a near post effort just off target.
28:00: I've no idea why that goal stood but it doesn't matter. Brian Smikle looked off side as Kyle Hadley sped down the right. He saw his effort blocked by the keeper but Smikle was on hand to dive and bundle it into the back of the net.
27:00: Goal! Brian Smikle scores!
26:00: Brian Smikle is told to calm down the referee after tempers flare as he and Kenny Davis battles for the ball. At one point the winger had been shielding the ball on the touchline surrounded by three Grays players.
23:00: Grays have hit back and force a corner. Harriers get a let off when Tom Harvey rises to meet Richard Graham's delivery at the far post but heads underneath it.
21:00: Jamie Slabber gets free but shoots across goal. His strike partner Daniel Charge had beaten Martin Riley to the ball and flicked a header at him.
19:00: Martin Riley heads behind after Kenny Davis swung in a decent right wing cross. From the resulting corner, Gavin Hoyte thumps a header straight at keeper Dean Coleman.
16:00: Matthew Barnes-Homer goes to shoot but it took a fine challenge by Gavin Hoyte to avert the danger. Harriers are definitely on top.
14:00: Brian Smikle shoots over from eight yards out. Matthew Barnes-Homer slipped a low cross from the left side of the box to the wideman but he thumps his first-time effort over the bar.
13:00: That goal was down to Brian Smikle. The winger broke down the left, teased Kenny Davis and sent in low ball that the home defence missed. Bennett arrived late to add an emphatic finish. That gets the goal monkey off their back!
12:00: Goal! Dean Bennett scores with a right-footed effort from the edge of the box.
10:00: Harriers win a second corner when Lee Baker's free-kick is headed behind.
9:00: Brian Smikle has a free header but directs it just wide. Promising stuff by the visitors.
8:00: Kyle Hadley speeds down the right and delivers a low cross that Cameron Mawer clears behind.
7:00: At the moment, Matthew Barnes-Homer is leading the line on his own, with Brian Smikle dropping back. Chris McPhee is breaking forward in support.
5:00: Kyle Hadley runs at full-back George Beavan and wins a throw-in. Its hoiked in by Duane Courtney but it is head out.
4:00: Competitive start by both teams, no one has settled yet.
1:00: John Finnigan makes an immediate impact He wins the ball off Craig Braham-Barrett on the left and tries to release Chris McPhee with a neat pass.
0:00: If Harriers wanted a sign that there dreadful run of results in Essex was about to end they must be encouraged by the news that the dugouts had been moved to the other side of the pitch.
0:00: Harriers have lost the last three games here at the New Recreation Ground and are desperate to end that run with a win today. Manager Mark Yates is convinced that despite just four points from the first four games, there is more to come from his team, let's find out...
0:00: Grays make one change from the side that beat Eastbourne in the week. Tom Harvey replaces Paul Terry, brother of England and Chelsea skipper, John, in midfield. Preston Edwards is in goal, with Cameron Mawer and Gavin Hoyte centrebacks. Kenny Davis is right-back and George Beavan on the left. In midfield, Grays have Ronnie Bull and Terry in the central midfield roles flanked by Richard Graham (right) and Craig Braham-Barrett (left). Jamie Slabber and Daniel Charge of up front for Athletic.
0:00: Good afternoon Harriers fans, welcome to Shuttle Online's minute-by-minute coverage of Grays v Harriers in the Blue Square Premier. Harriers have been forced to reshuffle the pack ahead of the clash because of an injury to striker Robbie Matthews. The former Salisbury man misses the game because of groin injury picked up in training at the end of the week. His absence has presented winger Kyle Hadley with a first Blue Square Premier start, playing alongside Matthew Barnes-Homer and Brian Smikle in a three-pronged attack. Former Cheltenham captain John Finnigan has also been handed his first start in a Harriers shirt in midfield. The 33-year-old has so far been restricted to cameo performances as he regained his match sharpness but has impressede the management in training.
